Simple Chicken Bone Broth

Simple Chicken Bone Broth

I continue to see so may bone broth supplements that cost an arm and a leg when it is such a simple process to do at home and so much cheaper. So, here is Mrs E’s simple bone broth method.

Embrace the health benefits of homemade bone broth with this straightforward recipe using your Instant Pot (if you dont have one use a pressure cooker). Not only is this method less time-consuming than traditional stove-top simmering, but it also extracts maximum flavour and nutrients from your ingredients.

I prefer to roast my bones, particularly chicken as it adds more flavour but it is optional.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 kg of mixed chicken bones (necks, backs, wings, and feet work well)
  • 2 medium carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 1 large onion, quartered (no need to peel)
  • 4 garlic cloves, smashed (no need to peel)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • A few sprigs of fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals from the bones)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 8-10 cups of water (enough to cover the bones but not exceed the pot’s max fill line)

Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Start by placing the chicken bones into your Instant Pot.
  2. Adding Vegetables and Seasoning: Add in the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Toss in the bay leaves, thyme, and pour in the apple cider vinegar. Sprinkle the salt evenly over the ingredients.
  3. Adding Water: Pour in enough water to just cover the bones and veggies, being careful not to pass the maximum fill line on your Instant Pot.
  4. Cooking the Broth: Secure the lid of your Instant Pot and set the valve to the sealing position. Select the ‘Soup/Broth’ setting and set the timer for 120 minutes at high pressure.
  5. Natural Release: Once the cooking time has elapsed, let the pressure release naturally. This will take about 20-30 minutes.
  6. Straining the Broth: Carefully strain the broth through a fine mesh sieve to remove the solids. You can further clarify it by straining through cheesecloth if desired.
  7. Cooling and Storing: Let the broth cool to room temperature before refrigerating or freezing. Skim off any solidified fat from the top before reheating and using.

Conclusion: Enjoy the rich, nourishing flavors of your homemade chicken bone broth! Whether sipped warm on its own, used as a base for soups and stews, or added to sauces, it’s a wonderfully healthy addition to your culinary repertoire.

Pro Tips:

Store broth in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze in small batches for easy use later.
