We often associate gut problems with obvious symptoms like bloating or indigestion – but the signs of an unhealthy gut can be far more subtle, especially in children.
When your gut is out of balance, it affects everything from your mood and immunity to your skin, hormones, and energy levels.
Here are some common signs to look out for – and what they might be telling you.
In Adults, Look For:
🧠 Low mood, anxiety or brain fog
Your gut and brain are deeply connected – gut inflammation or dysbiosis can lead to foggy thinking, irritability, or persistent low mood.
💨 Bloating, discomfort or irregularity
Whether it’s daily bloating, constipation, or unpredictable bowel habits, these are big red flags that your digestion isn’t happy.
😴 Fatigue and poor sleep
When your gut isn’t absorbing nutrients properly or your microbiome is disrupted, your energy and sleep quality can suffer.
🌿 Skin issues (acne, rosacea, eczema)
Your skin often reflects what’s going on inside. Ongoing skin flare-ups may point to deeper digestive inflammation or food sensitivities.
In Children, Look For:
🍽️ Picky eating or food aversions
Children often struggle to express gut discomfort. Avoidance of certain textures, foods, or random aversions can sometimes be linked to poor digestion or mild intolerances.
😠 Emotional swings, hyperactivity or anxiety
The gut-brain link is just as strong in children. If behaviour feels off, consider whether their gut might be part of the picture.
💩 Constipation or frequent tummy aches
Very common signs of imbalance in little ones – often tied to low fibre, stress, or hidden intolerances.
💤 Restlessness or trouble sleeping
Gut imbalance can affect melatonin production (your sleep hormone), even in children.
