Because snacks should fuel you — not send you crashing.
Let’s be honest: snacks keep the wheels turning. Whether it’s school pick-up, work-from-home munchies, or just “I need something now before I start eating bread straight from the bag” — we all reach for something quick.
But here’s the problem: most shop-bought snacks are ultra-processed, full of seed oils, and loaded with sugar… even the ones marketed as “natural.”
That’s why I make my own.
Trail mix and energy balls take just minutes to prep, cost less than store-bought options, and keep beautifully in the fridge or pantry.
🥜 Why Make Your Own?
- Customise to your taste (and avoid allergens or added sugars)
- Cheaper than buying individual snack packs
- Shelf-stable or fridge-stable — make ahead and store
- Kid-friendly and great for lunchboxes
- Packed with fibre, healthy fats, and gut-loving ingredients
🧺 My Go-To Trail Mix Formula
This changes depending on what’s in the pantry, but here’s my base:
✅ Raw almonds or cashews
✅ Pepitas or sunflower seeds
✅ Coconut flakes
✅ A few dried apricots, sultanas or cranberries (no added sugar if you can)
✅ Optional: dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs
Toss together and store in a jar for up to 3–4 weeks.
🍫 Easy Energy Balls (No Blender Needed)
These are the base I use most often — great for a little chocolate hit with real-food energy.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ¼ cup nut butter (I use 100% cashew or almond)
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tbsp chia or flaxseed
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
- Optional: shredded coconut, chopped dates, or choc chips
How to:
Mix everything together. Roll into balls. Chill. Eat.
Store in the fridge or freezer — or lunchboxes.
👩🍳 Make it Work for You
- Double the recipe and freeze half
- Mix your trail mix in bulk and portion into jars
- Let the kids help choose the add-ins (bonus: they’re more likely to eat it)
- Pair a bliss ball with fruit for a complete morning tea
This Week on Make it from Scratch Mondays
We’re swapping the packet snacks for something better. Try it once — I bet you’ll never go back to muesli bars that taste like cardboard again.
