Our First Test Run in the Van: Heatwaves, No Fish and… Chips for Dessert

They say the first trip is always a learning curve.
They don’t always mention heatwaves, stubborn ovens, and serving chips as dessert — but here we are.

This is our first test flight of the van. Not the glossy version. The real one. The “we’re learning… not yet loving” stage. And honestly? That’s exactly why I wanted to write this.

🌡️ Heat, Humility & Adjusting Expectations

We’ve landed ourselves in a heatwave, with rain on the way — the kind of conditions that really highlight what works in a caravan… and what absolutely doesn’t.

You learn quickly:

  • what heats the van up too much
  • what meals feel too heavy
  • and how much patience a caravan oven requires (spoiler: a lot)

🎣 When the Fish Don’t Bite

Today’s plan involved fishing.
Today’s reality involved no fish.

So dinner became:

  • Pizza (homemade dough, frozen in portions — a win)
  • A simple salad
  • Frozen calamari
  • And chips… eventually

The dough was one of those quiet prep wins — made at home, frozen flat, and pulled out when energy was low. Highly recommend future-you doing that for past-you.

🍟 The Great Chip Saga

The chips went into the caravan oven.
They stayed there.
And stayed there.

Two hours later, they were still negotiating their existence.

So into the BBQ they went — where they finally decided to cook properly.

By then, dinner had come and gone… so we served them as dessert.

Honestly? No regrets.

🚐 What This Trip Is Teaching Me

This first run isn’t about perfection. It’s about:

  • learning what to pre-cook
  • figuring out inside vs outside meals
  • understanding heat, smells, and timing
  • and letting go of the idea that every meal needs to “work”

Some days, it’s pizza and salad.
Some days, it’s calamari from the freezer.
Some days, chips are dessert.

And that’s okay.

🧠 Real Takeaways (So Far)

  • Frozen homemade basics are gold
  • Caravan ovens have opinions
  • BBQs are the real MVP
  • Simple food = happier evenings
  • Flexibility matters more than planning

We’re learning. Slowly. Sometimes begrudgingly.
But we’re learning.

And tomorrow? We’ll try again — hopefully with fish.
