Introduction
There are some meals that look like you’ve made an effort…
Crepes are one of them.
But in reality?
They’re one of the easiest ways to turn a few random ingredients into something that feels like a proper meal.
And when the fridge is looking a bit… bitsa —
a bit of this, a bit of that — they come into their own.
On our recent trip (9 days off-grid), these became one of our go-to meals.
No oven.
No complicated prep.
No perfect ingredients.
Just a simple batter… and whatever we had left.
Why Crepes Work So Well (Bitsa Approved)
Crepes aren’t a recipe you follow — they’re a base you build on.
They work because they:
- Use simple pantry ingredients
- Cook quickly on a pan or BBQ
- Work for sweet or savoury
- Use up leftovers easily
- Stretch what you have into a full meal
They’re one of those meals that help you use what’s there — properly.
The Bitsa Crepe Base (Make Once, Use All Day)
You don’t need much.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup plain flour
- 2 eggs
- 1¼ cups milk
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp melted butter (optional)
Method:
Whisk it all together (don’t worry about perfection), then cook thin layers in a lightly oiled pan.
Stack them up and keep them covered — ready to fill throughout the day.
👉 That’s your base sorted.
What Can We Make With This?
This is where the bitsa part comes in.
Open the fridge.
Look at what you’ve got.
Then build from there.
🥘 Savoury Bitsa Crepes (Lunch or Dinner)
🧀 Chicken, Cheese & Herbs
Leftover chicken, a bit of cheese, whatever herbs you’ve got
→ Fold, warm, done
🥓 Ham & Cheese
A classic for a reason
→ Add mustard or yoghurt if you’ve got it
🌿 Beans & Greens
That half tin of beans and a handful of spinach
→ Surprisingly filling, and a great way to stretch things
🍓 Sweet Bitsa Crepes (Breakfast or Dessert)
🍫 Chocolate & Fruit
Nutella, banana, strawberries — or whatever fruit needs using
🍓 Yoghurt & Berries
Fresh, simple, and works with whatever you’ve got
🥭 Mango & Yoghurt
Frozen or fresh — doesn’t matter
→ Quick, balanced, and easy
🏕️ Why This Works So Well for Camping
When you’re off-grid (or just low on supplies), you don’t want complicated meals.
Crepes work because:
- One batter = multiple meals
- Minimal washing up
- Easy on a BBQ or gas burner
- No waste — everything gets used
It’s the kind of cooking that makes life easier, not harder.
🔥 A Bitsa Reminder
Before you think:
“I don’t have enough for a meal”
Have another look.
That leftover chicken, half a tub of yoghurt, a handful of veg?
👉 That’s not scraps
👉 That’s filling for something
The Takeaway
Crepes aren’t just a “nice meal”.
They’re a way to:
- Use what you have
- Stretch ingredients
- Reduce waste
- And still feed your family properly
A bit of this.
A bit of that.
And somehow… it all works.
Final Thought
Next time the fridge isn’t quite inspiring…
Don’t overthink it.
Make the base.
Use what you’ve got.
And let it become a bitsa meal.
