It’s nostalgic, quick, and comforting. Peanut butter on toast – or the classic PB&J – is a go-to for busy mornings and lunchboxes alike. But if you’re still spreading it onto white bread and calling it a meal, it’s time to take a closer look at what you’re actually fuelling your body with.
Spoiler: it’s not terrible, but it could be doing a lot more for you.
🥖 Let’s Start with the Bread
White bread – especially the supermarket kind – is highly refined. It’s low in fibre and nutrients, which means it digests quickly, spikes your blood sugar, and leaves you hungry not long after.
Paired with something sticky and sweet like jam (or even honey), you’ve created a fast-burning, low-nutrient meal that doesn’t offer much in the way of lasting energy or nourishment.
🥜 Is Peanut Butter Healthy? Yes – but it depends
Peanut butter itself isn’t the villain. In fact, it can be a great source of healthy fats and protein if you choose the right kind. The problem is, many supermarket brands are full of:
- Added sugar
- Hydrogenated oils
- Emulsifiers and preservatives
This turns a potentially wholesome ingredient into an ultra-processed spread that’s a far cry from just ground peanuts.
🍓 And the Jam?
Most commercial jams are more sugar than fruit. Add that to low-fibre bread, and you’ve created the kind of high-GI snack that leaves you feeling sluggish soon after.
🔁 Simple Swaps to Do It Better
You don’t need to ditch peanut butter altogether. In fact, let’s keep it – just build your snack or meal around it more thoughtfully:
✅ Swap white bread for sourdough or seeded multigrain
– Adds fibre and better blood sugar control
✅ Choose natural peanut butter (100% peanuts, nothing else)
– More nutrients, no nasties
✅ Ditch the jam – use sliced banana, strawberries, or chia jam instead
– Real fruit = fibre + vitamins + fewer sugar crashes
✅ Add a side of fruit or veg for balance
– Carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or an apple make this a real, whole-food meal
✅ Want to warm it up? Toast it gently or grill it briefly
– But remember: don’t overcook it and avoid overusing oils (especially if air frying it – more on that here in our blog on cooking and nutrition)
🧠 What You Eat – and How You Cook It – Matters
Even the simplest meals deserve a second thought. A PB&J might feel like comfort food, but it can also be a missed opportunity to nourish your body, stabilise your energy, and support your long-term health.
