A few years ago, many of us stood in supermarket aisles staring at empty shelves. Flour disappeared. Pasta was hard to find. Even toilet paper became the subject of headlines. For many families, it was a wake-up call. Not because we needed to panic, but because we realised just how dependent we had become on the next grocery delivery. Since then, the cost of living has continued to rise. Floods, bushfires and storms have disrupted supply chains. Fresh produce prices can change overnight, and many households are looking for ways to make their food budget stretch a little further. For me, building a resilient pantry isn't about preparing for the end of the world. It's about creating peace of mind. It's knowing that if life throws your family a curveball—whether it's a power outage, unexpected bills, illness, bad weather or simply a week where getting to the supermarket isn't possible—you can still put nourishing meals on the table. That's food resilience. And it's something every family can build, one small step at a time. What is a resilient pantry? A resilient pantry is more than shelves filled with tins. It's a way of thinking. It's choosing foods that last, learning how to preserve seasonal produce, growing even a little of your own food, and developing the confidence to cook simple meals from everyday ingredients. It doesn't happen overnight, and it certainly doesn't require spending thousands of dollars. In fact, the best resilient pantry is usually built slowly, as part of your normal grocery shop. Buy an extra bag of rice one week. An extra tin of tomatoes the next. A few packets of seeds in spring. Over time, those small decisions become something incredibly valuable. The five pillars of food resilience 1. Grow what you can You don't need acres of land. A few pots of herbs, a raised garden bed, or some lettuce growing on the balcony is a wonderful place to start. Every tomato, handful of spinach or bunch of parsley you grow yourself is one less thing to buy. Gardening also teaches patience, seasonality and appreciation for where our food comes from. 2. Store simple pantry staples Some of the most useful foods are also some of the cheapest. Think rice, oats, dried beans, lentils, flour, pasta and tinned tomatoes. These ingredients become soups, curries, casseroles, breads, muffins, pasta sauces and family dinners. Rather than buying speciality foods you'll rarely use, build your pantry around ingredients that appear on your dinner table every week. 3. Preserve the seasons When fruit and vegetables are abundant, they're often at their cheapest. Freeze excess berries. Dry herbs from the garden. Bottle tomatoes. Make jam from surplus fruit. Pickle cucumbers or beetroot. Preserving isn't old-fashioned—it's simply making the most of nature's abundance while reducing waste. 4. Learn a few simple cooking skills Knowing how to bake bread, cook dried beans, make soup or turn leftover roast chicken into tomorrow's dinner is far more valuable than having cupboards full of convenience foods. These are skills that save money year after year. They also bring enormous satisfaction. 5. Waste less One of the easiest ways to improve food security is to throw away less food. Leftover roast vegetables become frittatas. A chicken carcass becomes stock. Stale bread becomes breadcrumbs. Overripe bananas become muffins. Those little habits save hundreds of dollars over a year. At our place, I often call these our "Bitsa meals"—bits of this and bits of that coming together to create something delicious instead of ending up in the compost bin. You don't need to prepare for disaster One thing I'd like to make clear is that building a resilient pantry isn't about fear. It's not about hoarding shelves of food you'll never eat. It's about being intentional. Buying foods your family already enjoys. Rotating your pantry so nothing goes to waste. Learning practical skills that make everyday life easier. If nothing unexpected happens, you've simply enjoyed home-cooked meals, saved money and reduced waste. If life does become difficult for a while, you'll be incredibly grateful for those small preparations. What our grandparents understood Our great-grandparents rarely called it "food resilience." They simply called it life. They baked bread because it was economical. They grew vegetables because it made sense. They preserved fruit because it was in season. They stretched meals because wasting food wasn't an option. While life today looks very different, many of those same habits still serve us well. Not because we're expecting hardship, but because they help us live more sustainably, spend more wisely and appreciate real food. Start this week If you're wondering where to begin, don't overthink it. This week, try just one small step. Buy one extra pantry staple you'll use regularly. Plant a packet of herbs. Freeze leftover vegetables instead of throwing them away. Make a pot of soup from what's already in the fridge. Learn one preserving skill you've always wanted to try. Small actions add up surprisingly quickly. A resilient pantry isn't built in a weekend. It's built meal by meal, season by season, and year by year. And perhaps the greatest benefit isn't what's sitting on your shelves. It's the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can always nourish the people you love.
